Cheat Day

Here I am at the end of my cheat meal day.  My husband took me to one of our favorite restaurants tonight.  The Elephant Bar.  But, you know, the funny thing is, I really didn't order that badly.  The worst thing I ate there was the calamari.   However, I did head straight to Godiva after dinner to redeem my free truffle (rewards program).  Still my cheat day only ended up about 200 calories over my budget for the day.  It's funny how even when your allowed an indulgence, you will still choose more healthful things, overall.  I just feel better when I eat better.  And I sleep with less guilt.

My recovery from my 16 miles when a bit easier then I had thought.  My body only really rejected yesterday's short run.  I did a cycling class on Monday morning just to keep things loose.  I woke up with stiff hips and minimally sore knees but other than that I felt pretty good.  However, yesterday afternoon when I took my legs out for a short run, they attempt to argue with me for the entire 3 miles.  They were not happy to be out running.  I pushed them throw it slowly though and eventually they began to give up a little.  Today feels almost 100%.    I'm still not sure how I;m gonna get my body to do 10 more miles but I'm gonna keep trying. 

Personal training on Monday was upper body.  Chest, shoulders and triceps.  Sets of TRX rows, dips, push-ups with weighted pulls and of course sit-ups.  Because I love sit-ups!  I can never do enough sit-ups.  (I'm convinced if I keep saying that, it will become true).

Inner Critic

Holy crap, it's been more then a week since I posted!  How quickly life can get away from a person.  Two a day workouts, a full time job, a full time marriage, and full time kids leaves very little free time.  It's all good though.  I love my life right now, with the exception of my job and even that will be working itself out sooner then I anticipated.  But let's get to it.

Today I ran (cried a little and stumbled some) 16 miles.  Let me start by saying that it was 25 degrees out with 10MPH wind.  Every damn step of this run sucked!  I even cried a little at the end.  The only thing that really kept me from quitting was that I posted it on Facebook and I CAN'T be a liar on Facebook.  I know how twisted that sounds, but it is totally true. Around mile 10 my inner critic, whom I choose to call Matilda, started in.  Her glasses pulled down on her nose, eyes glaring over the rims,  mouth pursed and finger wagging.  Yep, she had the whole 9 yards going on today.  She even called me an idiot for thinking that I can  do this.  She thinks I should take my butt home and settle it down on couch and knit a blanket or something.  She thinks I'm too old to trying something like this for this first time.  She told me to just knock it off and go back home where I belong.  She is such a bitch!  It's a good thing I have Facebook to keep me going.  It's all about accountability to me.  The whole 16 miles may not have been pretty but I finished them.  I wanted to quit.  I said out loud "I can't."  I even cried a little.  But, in the end I kept pushing and I finished it.  I'm not sure how I'm going to convince my mind and my body that we can add 10 more miles on to that before April 28th.  I guess I'll have to worry about that in two weeks before my nest schedule long run (18 miles).

Now working backwards through my week.  It was sub 0 windchill temps for most of the week which makes it extremely difficult to go outside and run, especially with my lung issues.  So, I found a sufficient substitute in spinning.  It works the same muscle groups with lower impact.  It may become my new obsession.  Like I need another one, right?  I'm still working on two a day workouts and the PT sessions with Lindsay have been kicking butt and taking names.  The workouts have been challenging, I even maybe wanted to punch her a time or two (Shhh, don't tell her...sorry boo, I <3 U).  It's all led up to a much better stamina then I could have expected.  It's hard for me to see the end goal yet but each day gets me a little closer to believing in myself and my ability to smash this goal. 

I would like to keep telling you all about my week but I am sitting at Biggby in an extremely uncomfortable chair and my back and legs are screaming at me to go home and put on my pajamas.  I just want to end with the fact that I have kicked butt with my diet this week too.  Stayed within my calorie goal and not indulged in something sinful every single day, even when I was in a stupid "lunch provided" training for two days.  I made the best possible choice that I could and brought the extra large cookies (that came with the "boxed" lunch) to my husband at the end of the day.  My willpower was working 110% this week which gave me more energy and puffed my chest up with self-pride a little bit.  Overall, a great week!

Rock that Body

I feel totally in charge today.  For two days I was totally down for the count.  I had my first (and surely my last) root canal on Wednesday.  There's a whole story there but the after story is the one that will be told here..  I figured I would have a little discomfort but nothing extreme.  I was super surprised when I woke up at 1:30 in the morning with the most severe pain that I have experienced in a long while.  The tooth hurt worse then before the root canal!  It was excruciating and no amount of Ibuprofen would alleviate it (which was all the endodontist told me to take).  Needless to say, I could not work on Thursday because I was in so much pain and because I hadn't slept.  So I called the doctor and they called me in some prescription meds and told me to call them back if it didn't get better by morning.  Well, it didn't!  And the meds they gave me weren't really helping either.  So 2 nights of no sleep and severe, sob inducing pain.  By then the pain was not only just in the tooth but in my whole jaw, like someone had punched me in the face.  The doctor's office called me first thing Friday morning (which I still was not going to work due to pain and lack of rest).  When I told them the pain was not better they scheduled to see me at 1:30pm.  I arrived promptly for that appointment, against my better judgement since they were the reason I was in the pain in the first place.  But of course, as is par for any medical office, they were running behind and I had to wait in the uncomfortable lobby chairs while I pretended to be reading a People Magazine but really how could I focus on anything with my face feeling like tiny little men were stabbing me in the tooth and jaw with tiny little, very sharp swords!  So really I just shifted around a lot and flipped the pages of this week's People politely until my name was called.  Then the doc says they are going to remove the temporary filling so the infection can drain but they are not going to numb the area because they need me to tell them what it feels like.  Say what, Willis?!?!  Are you bleepty, bleep, bleep kidding me?!!!!  However, it wasn't as bad as I thought.  They successfully drained the infection and put more medicine in it and a new temporary filling.  There was finally some relief.  I was able to come home and rest, the pain meds finally worked and I woke up this morning a new woman.  The lesson I take away from this is never agree to a root canal again! 

Needless to say, the pain and the narcotics made it impossible to get my second short run in this week.  But, I did get my 7 miles in today.  It was fairly warm but the wind was wicked!  Like 25mph today.  It provided much resistance.  Slowed me down some but since I got a Piyo class and and Extreme class in this morning, I think I can handle a little slow down.  My Personal Training with Lindsay is really paying off too.  She has got my legs stronger then they have ever been. I am loving it.  On Wednesday she had me do the following series:

40 push-ups followed by 100 walking lunges
35 push-ups followed by 100 walking lunges
30 push-ups followed by 100 walking lunges
25 push-ups followed by 100 walking lunges
20 push-ups followed by 100 walking lunges

In case your a little slow (and I'm not judging you for that, God loves all of his children LOL) that's 150 push-ups and 500 walking lunges total!  Holy screaming quads Batman!  I am really loving this training and my new strength.  Taking things to a new level.

Speaking of new level, I also tried a few new things this week.  One was a class called Fitzone.  It's cardio and weight training.  It was amazing!  Awesome addition to my routine.  I also tried Piyo which is like yoga on steroids.  Loved It!  And the instructor, Kevin Jewell is an amazing young man.  I might have a little gym crush.  Shhh, don't tell.  The kid is young enough to be my son.  He's just so positive and a little cutie pie.

I also ruled this week with my diet.  Totally back in line.  We didn't eat out at all this week and all the recipes I tried this week were healthy and well rounded.  I feel so much better!  I still need to do Dr. Oz's 3 day cleanse.  I just have to carve out some time when my schedule and my workouts are light enough to handle it. 

Overall, this was a good week and I am riding the wave.  Healthy meals this week have led to fewer cravings for crap food.  That, is remarkable in and of itself.  I even passed on a homemade chocolate dessert the other night.  Maybe that was the meds or the pain though.  Sane people don't usually pass up homemade chocolate mousse tortes.

Random thoughts

Wow!  It's already the middle of January.  This winter is really flying by.  Only 6 more weeks until March.  I love getting to March.  It's still wintery but the days are longer and the sun is brighter.  I am very grateful that this winter has spared us so far.  Today may have been the coldest run I've had so far in this training.  At 28 degrees today at noon, I was expecting it to be pretty cold out there but surprisingly the sun was warm.  It did not feel horrible at all.  What did feel rough was my legs.  Last night's personal training was all lower body.  Weighted lunges, Squats with the barbell, reverse leg curls and deadlifts.  My legs were feeling it today, but in a good way.  I can feel my strength and endurance adapting to the new demands I am placing on them.  It is a good thing.  My question though is this:  If my legs are getting so much workout and my muscle strength is improving everyday then WHY is the cellulite on them not improving!?   So frustrating.  How can I get that shredded look?  I workout 6 days a week.  I push myself to my edge at every workout, so why can I not get rid of my "squishy" parts?  How much more can I do?  Okay, enough about that.

A few weeks ago my husband and I were wandering around my favorite store, Dick's Sporting Goods and we ran across a product called Body Glide.  It looks like a stick of deodorant but it's for chafing.  My husband and I got a good laugh out of it.  After Saturday's run I wished I would have not laughed at it but bought it.  Let me tell you, the raw areas were seriously raw!  I'm just now walking normally again and it wan't because my muscles were sore.  I am definitely going to invest in some Body Glide before my 16 miler on January 26.  I also want to mention that during my LR on Saturday I used Herbalife 24 Prolong.  It's a carb and electrolyte drink.  I started sipping it around mile 6 and kept sipping on it throughout the last half of my run.  Miles 7-14 were my strongest miles.  My pace was better then the beginning of my run and I was able to space my walk breaks further apart.  The stuff doesn't taste that great but the results are AMAZING!  If you want ordering details, inbox me and I'll help you.





I'm working on some new recipes this week too.  Tonight I made Thai Mango Fried Rice with Chicken Breast and tomorrow I have Stuffed Green Peppers prepped for the crockpot.  On Thursday I will be trying Seared Pork chops with Shitake Mushrooms and a Quinoa side dish.  It feels good to be following through on the resolution I made to cook at home more.  I have many more ideas too, as I get about 7 Women's/Fitness magazines in the mail every month.  Yes, another obsession of mine.  There are worse things to go overboard on, right?
