A couple of things...

Saturday 1/12/13

I amaze myself sometimes.  Today was a long run, 14 miles to be exact.  This is farther then I have ever run before.  I was a little afraid that I wasn't gonna be able to make it but when all was said and done the last half of the run was stronger then the first half.  In fact, my last mile was my strongest.  Not saying that I felt like I could go much further then that last mile, just saying that it was my strongest.  So, I was out there on the University trail and through Wildwood MetroPark and a couple of PSA's developed in my mind:

#1.  Please refrain from spitting on the trail.  Would it really kill you to turn your head in the other direction and spit off the side of the trail.  Now don't get me wrong, I do have sympathy for those spitters.  We all contend with something out there but to hawk a big lougie right where someone else might step seems selfish and arrogant.  Please be mindful of this when you're out there.  Those big wads of mucous made me puke a little in my mouth.  Not a good thing to have happen when your trying to run.  Be mindful of runners with weak stomachs.  Thanks for attention to this matter.

#2.  Dogwalkers please pick up your dog's doo doo off the trail.  Now, I love dogs.  I have two of my own.  When I walk my dogs, I clean up after them, even when no one is looking.  It's hard to dodge dog shit when you're trying to focus on putting one foot in front of the other and keeping pace.  Please be a responsible dog walker.  Again, be mindful of the runners, especially the ones with weak stomachs.  Thanks for attention to this matter as well.

With that being said, I feel better now.  I had a great play list for today which I am gonna share here.  Now keep in mind that I have a very eclectic blend of musical tastes, so don't laugh.

Good luck trying to read that, copy and pasted it from iTunes.  Apparently, I don't know how to do that correctly.  Oh well.

On another note, I am really succeeding with my 2 a day workouts and the personals with Lindsay at Extreme are kick ass!  I'm sure that is what is helping me smash my goals.  I ran 14 miles to day in 2:30:49 with a pace of 10:46 per mile and a calorie burn of 1324 calories.  That is a better time then I ran both of the half-marathons that I participated in in 2010.  Thank you Extreme Results and Herbalife.  With right nutrition and proper training, anything is possible.

I am killing it on this 12 week challenge and on my marathon training.  I feel confident and accomplished today.  I have chili in the crock pot and I'm gonna make some raisin bread to go with it.  Tonight I will be treating myself to a quiet evening with my husband, a New Release and a bowl of pan popped popcorn.  Have a fabulous Saturday, hope you all got out and enjoyed a little of this awesome January thaw!

Two a Days

Tuesday 1/8/13

Ahhh....feeling much better today.  My feet and legs were moving right along today in their usual pattern.  I was certainly a more happy runner today.  I'm gearing up for 14 miles this weekend and according to the forcast, it's gonna be close to 60degrees on Satrurday.  WOOHOO!!!  Yes, it's still January and yes I still live in Ohio.  I am looking forward to this run...I think.  13.1 miles is the furtherest I have ever run and that was over 2 years ago.  I am feeling alittle nervous but I do think that I can do it.  I just have to break it down into smaller parts.  Since there are built in walk breaks in this training program I usually break my long runs into how many walk breaks I have left, especially in the last half of the run..."only 3 more walk breaks."  " You can do anything you need to for a few more miles and then you get to walk for a minute."  The mental cheerleader kicks in.  I also like to break things in to fractions.  Like, "okay you are a quarter of the way down,"  "you rocked it for 3/5 of this run, only 2/5 to go."  Yes this is how I talk to myself out there and no I am not crazy.  It really works!  I think I need to build a new play list though.  The ones I have are great but I'm getting a little burned out on S&M and 50 Ways to Say Good-bye.  Time to mix it up a little bit, literally.  I'll work on that in my free time.

I am doing two-a-day workouts right now.  Monday through Friday, long run on Saturday (or Sunday depending on the better weather day) and yoga on Sunday.  Monday and Wednesdays consist of Personal Training sessions.  Friday will be lifting on my own.  Tuesday and Thursdays are my short runs.  In addition to that I will be taking daily cardio classes.  I want to be totally prepped to run for 5 hours come April 28th.  Building stamina and endurance is no easy task.  This is taking a lot more commitment everyday.  Some sacrifices too.  You can't devote 2-3 hours a day to working out without having to give up something else, like your favorite shows because your too exhausted to stay up and watch it.  This is definitely one of those things that is totally worth it to make the sacrifices.  I want to be in a healthier spot then ever before on April 28th when I am lined to to begin my ultimate journey.

Things that have been plaguing me though are fear of injury or illness.  People all around me are sick right now and it really scares me to death.  I cannot afford to be sick right now but it seems that everyone around me is sick.  People at work, family members (thank God not the ones who live with me), friends.  Everyone seems to have this ugly upper respiratory crap.  No thanks.  Eating extra Vitamin C and wiping everything down with some tea tree oil.  Keep the crude away from me!  If I get sick it will set me back considerably.  I also have this weird, unrealistic fear of injury right now too.  I am being super paranoid about things and keep having these ugly visions of landing wrong on my ankle or blowing out my knee.  I am a little crazy about it right now.  Then I think, "only xx more weeks until it's over and you can get back to normal."  So, if you don't mind, everyone send up an extra prayer for me and my slightly schizophrenic thoughts right now.  Thanks!

Heavy

Sunday 1/6/13

Today was not a good day to run.  I felt like I was running through mud for the entire 6 miles.  My limbs felt heavy and my left shoulder was bothering me.  It's weird to be bothered by my shoulder when I was running.  Not the typical aliment that you think of being associated with running.  Anyway, I'm not sure if it is the cold temps or something else.  I know that I have also been more tired then usual.  I slept until 7:30 on Saturday and until 9:00am today.  That is unheard of!  I am always an early riser.  Maybe I;m getting sick or something.  I sure hope not.  I don't have it in me for that right now.

Today is Sunday, the holidays are over, a new January routine needs to get set.  Therefore, I need to make some meal plans and getting my schedule in order.  Then I need to shop for the ingredients for those meals and get my laundry together for the week.  And damn, it's already going on 2:00pm.  I better get started...sigh, procrastination will not get me to my goal.  So, let's do this.  I'll fill you all in on the details tomorrow (because I know you will all be on pins and needles about what I will be doing next...haha).

Starting out with a Bang

Thursday 1/3/13

So not comfortable with putting "13" for the year.  13 has always been thought of as an unlucky number.  Based on some of the current events making headlines one might think that unluck could be the theme for 2013.  I guess we'll see how lucky I will be or won't be next Thursday when I get the first paycheck of this year.

I had my first personal training session with Lindsay last night and I can barely walk today!  In a good way of course.  She really knows how to show a girl a good time.  What she did last night was an endurance test that we will repeat at the end of my sessions to track my improvement.  Well let me tell you, I had no freaking idea that I could leg press 160 pounds.  I just never would have pushed myself to that level.  Which is exactly why I bought those sessions.  I want to be pushed to my limit.  I also registered for the Ultimate Body Challenge through the Michigan STS today.  It is a 12 week challenge to get me to my level 10.  I took measurements and and had a body scan.  Now I have a starting point and a new goal that is pushing me to make better choices, one day at a time.

I did not do a short run today.  Too damn sore from personal training on Wednesday.  Wow, is my body gonna have to adjust to this quickly.  I'm sure it will.  Gonna shoot for a short run sometime tomorrow and then I only have a 6 mile run for this weekend.  It's a recovery week.  Thank God!  I am still feeling a little beat up.  I am now challenging myself in ways that I have not in the past.  My glutes and quads are screaming at me today.  I have to get one of those foam rollers but they scare me a little.  I think I'll go take a yoga class too.  That could be helpful.  Teaching yoga is cool but you can't get what you need out of giving others what they need.

Then came the new year

Tuesday 1/1/13

Today is the first day of the new year and my wedding anniversary.  What an awesome day to celebrate new opportunities and a renewal of love.  I tend to be on the bah humbug side of most holidays.  I am not a fan of the ove rcommercialized Christian Holidays that make me feel like a slave to consumerism and indulgences.  I am not a fan of Halloween (my kids on candy = a bad, bad combination).  I am not a fan of Hallmark holidays that promote special days for romantic gestures.  They should be spontaneous and genuine.  I am a fan of the other government holidays that give me an extra day of recreation from my job (that I am not currently a fan of) and I am a fan of birthdays.  The day of your own personal celebration of life!  The day that God danced because you were born.  And lastly, I am a fan of New Year's Day.  A day of peace and rest.  A day to look to the future and make some plans, lists, and commitments.  So, that is kind of what I did.  I took some time to rest and recuperate as I considered what I want this year to become for me.  My theme this year has to include health, but also peace.  Peace of mind and spirit.  Things have definitely been a challenge over this last year and I am done with trying to fit the ideal that some people have for me.  I am my own person with my own ideas, feelings, and thoughts.  I do not need to apologize for who I am.  I also do not need to be disrespectful to anyone about who I am.  So those are on the top of my list this year.  Of course, finishing the marathon is at the top of the list as well.  But, as I read more about willpower I am learning that scientifically willpower is like a muscle and does get fatigued when we try to use it on too many things at one time.  Therefore, it is suggested that we focus on one thing at a time.  Maybe these are the two things to spend my time and energy on right now.  I also want to add other things to the Year Of Me (as a good friend put it on her FB page).  But first I will master being me and finishing what I started.

I ran in the Midnight Special 5K on New Year's Eve/Day.  It was my worst ever performance.  It's not that the weather was horrible either.  It was about 30 degrees and there was very little wind.  The path was snow covered and a bit icy underneath.  It was really hard to get my footing.  I also had trouble breathing.  I couldn't catch my breath and got dizzy several times.  It was just an all around bad run.  I guess sometimes you'll have that.  After the run, I thought I might be getting sick because I had this weird chest cough all the way home but I woke up okay tidat so I really don't know what it was.  I am just chalking that one up and I intend to move on and not dwell on one bad run.  I start my personal training sessions Tuesday and I am excited to add in some new challenges so I can begin to see some new results.  I did put on a few pounds over the holidays and am not really happy about the regression.  I am back on track and feeling better already.  I am so happy that those damn holidays only come once a year.

Monday night/Tuesday morning:  5K (3.1 miles) 38:38; 12:12 pace; 290 calories....it's almost an embarrassment to post this most horrible performance but I promised I'd give you all the good and the bad.  So there it is.

A year in Review

Sunday 12/30/12

Yesterday's long run was 12 miles, in the snow.  It snowed only about 3 inches over night into Saturday morning.  It was still the better day to train.  Today is more cold and a little more windy.  The snow doesn't bother me.  In fact, when I first went out to run it was still snowing a bit and I actually enjoyed that.  I always have.  What I did not care for was that the bike trail had not been cleared off yet and part of Wildwood Park.  It was a little brutal on the ankles.  I am feeling a bit weak today.  It was a 12 mile run yesterday and it went much faster than I had anticipated it would.  Not literally but figuratively.  I estimated that it would take about 2 hours and 20 minutes to run it and my actually came in at 2:17.  I did really well for the conditions and mentally I was good.  The longer the runs get the more amazed I am at how my body is holding up to it.  I did go to the gym this morning, even though I should have rested.  But, in my defense I will not be able to go tomorrow and they are closed on Tuesday.  So, I will have a forced rest day.  Sigh...why do I not know how to let myself rest?

Of course I am thinking about the past year, it is the end of 2012.  It has been such an eventful and interesting year.  Some good, some not so good, and some things just are.  If I think about things in terms of accomplishments this year (large and small) here's what I come up with:

1.  I finished with the personal trainers certification
2.  I maintained my healthy weight
3.  I decided to and committed to running a marathon
4.  I finished a few household projects
5.  I made some new friends
6.  I read some great books.  Mostly fiction because I had been neglecting to read for fun for a long time.
7.  I paid off some bills
8.  I finally got that dental work done
9.  I improved my credit score, paid off my old car and got a new one
10.  I made a decision about my next career move
11.  I'm still deeply in love with my husband

That's just a short list of things I can come up with off the top of my head.  I am excited about 2013 and what will be happening in this new year.  My determination to get even better in the year to come is an energy that cannot be contained.  I am about to come apart at the seems with anticipation for what's next!

Willpower and Lists

Thursday 12/27/12

Christmas is over but there is still too much food at my house to to even think about getting back on track again.  2013 is going to be about Willpower for me.  I even just picked up a book at the library about  Willpower...hope it helps me stay away from the damn gingerbread cookies.  I ate 6 of them last night!  Not because I really wanted them, mostly just because they were there.  Major fail!  I feel terrible too.  Not the guilt factor so much but the physical heaviness and major slow down.  My muscles feel like they weigh a million pounds when I try to workout.  With as much as I have eaten, maybe they do weigh that much.  I haven't been on the scale but I can tell it's definitely going in the wrong direction!  Yikes! The one thing that I am doing right is sticking to my training schedule.  I even ran on Christmas Day.  4.6 miles to be exact.  I needed that.  I won't lie either, I was feeling pretty superior as I was out there running, knowing that very few people make a Christmas Day workout a priority.  I also got a run in today, in the snow.  Luckily we did not get as much snow as was predicted (highly unusual for our forecasters...NOT).  So, my midday run today was only slightly sloppy.  I had to pay attention to the slushy areas, they were a little slippery but overall it was a decent short run.  I don't mind the snow usually.  As long as it doesn't come with too much wind.  I also sent in my registration today for the race.  The price goes up on January 1.  I wanted to get mine in before the price increased.  Now I am 100% committed to finishing the race since I really hate to waste money.  There's no turning back now.

I have a new obsession.  It is with lists.  I am going to journal my way through 2013 using lists.  Lists of great songs that inspired me through my life, lists of places I'd like to visit (maybe with some pictures on that one too), lists of books I wanna read, movies that have impacted me, great one liners from those movies, moments that have changed the course of my life, people who have influenced me, lessons I've learned, funny-isms my kids have said, races I've run, etc...I've been a pretty avid journaler for about 8 years now but this year I want it to be a little more fun and a lot  more meaningful, instead of just me vomiting all my petty grievances on paper.  Hence, fun with lists is the theme for 2013.

So far, physically I am holding up pretty good with my training.  I do suffer from Restless Leg Syndrome and it seems to be plaguing me (and my poor husband) more than usual lately.  I was looking up some stuff on the Internet (because I have my Internet medical license you know) and found that magnesium and electrolyte deficiencies have been known contributors to RLS.  Hmmm, more Smart Water and Kelp for me.  Just kidding, almonds and cashews have a significant amount of magnesium too.  Let's see if I can get some natural relief.  I fear heavy medications because of the hangover effect of most of them.  I have to be alert and ready to go when I get up in the morning.  I have things to do and people to see!  Other than the RLS outbursts, my legs, hips and feet are holding up well under the training.  I start some strength training with Lindsay next week to improve my upper body and core.  I will get my eating back in line before then or paying for those personal training sessions will be a big waste of time and money.
