One Third of the Way There

The reward that I give myself for completing the long runs, as scheduled, is time at my favorite coffee house.  It's one of my favorite things to do.  Sitting, soaking up some atmosphere and surfing the web or tuning everything out with some music and reading a good novel.  Today, is a big reward for me.  I went out and completed 8.6 miles this morning.  It was awesome,except for the rain.  It was foggy when I started then it began misting and that eventually turned into a steady drizzle.  The rain dripped into my eyes and made my thighs burn from the cold dampness of my pants but I was so comfortable in my pace that I barely noticed it.  Running in the rain is my least favorite activity but today it didn't seem that bad.  I ran strong and steady till the last mile when my glutes began to cramp up on me a little bit.  Nothing too terrible though.  In fact I feel pretty good this afternoon.  After I got back from my run I realized that I ran approximately 1/3 of a marathon today.  I started thinking about that and figured that I will be able to finish a marathon.  The last third of it probably will not look as graceful as the first third but I will cross the finish line, if today was any indication of what I can get do.  Not bad today, considering I haven't run more than 6 miles since October of 2010.  I don't want to get over confident but I really do think that I got this.

This week I have been dealing with an abscessed tooth.  I have to go to a specialist to have a root canal but first the infection has to get cleared up.  To top things off, I have exhausted my dental benefits until January.  Needless to say, it has taken a serious strategy to figure out when to take the meds to ward off the pain and not interfere with my workouts.  I will not let this stop me though.  Only once this week did I get the timing wrong, as evidenced by a few mishaps at the gym in the morning which led to me punching myself in the head a few times (don't ask).  At the beginning of this I said that I would be honest with you about my training, good and bad.  I hope no one was taking a drink of something when they read that.  They would have risked spitting  it out their nose just then.  You remember that old Wide World of Sports jingle...the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.  Sometimes you win some and some times...you just don't.
